La 57e édition de la Biennale de Venise, « Viva Arte Viva » a été confiée à la Française Christine Macel, conservatrice du Centre Pompidou, à Paris. Du parcours de celle-ci, on retient souvent l’exposition « Dionysiac » réalisée en 2005 autour de la jouissance débordante de certains artistes face à la vie. Si la commissaire a choisi, pour cette biennale, de remettre la vie au cœur du propos en faisant une exposition centrée davantage sur les artistes que sur les œuvres, le dionysiaque n’apparait plus que comme une portion congrue dans l’un des neuf « trans-pavillons » que la commissaire a construits pour rythmer l’exposition principale à ­l’Arsenal et au pavillon central des Giardini1 1 - L’un des trans-pavillons y fait explicitement référence : The Dionysian Pavilion, dédié aux femmes artistes..
