Avec un intitulé tiré d’un recueil datant du 11e siècle, Les impératifs : Poèmes de l’ascèse d’Abû l-Alâ al-Ma’arrî (Gallimard, 2010), l’exposition de Mathieu Pernot, gagnant du prix HCB 2019, établit des ponts visuels entre des archives documentaires et des captations récentes de lieux du Moyen-Orient en prenant leur état de ruine comme un filon commun.

L’itinérance photographique de Pernot démarre avec l’album photo de son grand-père, René Pernot, dont le voyage, réalisé en 1926 et calqué sur le modèle du Grand Tour, fixe le parcours initiatique de Beyrouth à Mossoul en passant par Tripoli, Homs, Baalbeck, Palmyre et Damas. L’installation hybride présentée à la Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson n’a toutefois pas la prétention scientifique du documentaire et encore moins celle du reportage journalistique.
