En r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 ces questions, l\u2019artiste belge Vincent Meessen propose <em>Blues Klair<\/em>, pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e \u00e0 la Galerie Leonard &amp; Bina Ellen sous le commissariat de Mich\u00e8le Th\u00e9riault. Le bleu indigo, symbole de l\u2019exploitation d\u2019esclaves par les empires coloniaux qui ont extrait l\u2019indigotier pour produire le pigment, devient la couleur de la r\u00e9bellion. Ce pigment aux nuances et aux r\u00e9f\u00e9rences diversifi\u00e9es, \u00e0 la port\u00e9e po\u00e9tique significative, agit comme un filtre \u00e0 la lecture de l\u2019exposition. Blues Klair constitue une \u00ab\u2009contrearchive\u2009\u00bb d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e8nements historiques issus de l\u2019effervescence politique des ann\u00e9es 1960 et 1970. Celle-ci s\u2019appuie sur des instigateurs d\u2019importants bouleversements sociaux : les po\u00e8tes Gylan Kain et Patrick Straram, de m\u00eame que les participants aux manifestions de 1969 \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 Sir George Williams. L\u2019approche artistique de Meessen concilie avec acuit\u00e9 les faits historiques ayant \u00e9rig\u00e9 la modernit\u00e9 coloniale dans l\u2019imaginaire occidental dans le but de proposer une histoire actuelle et ses potentiels transculturels. Ainsi, <em>Blues Klair<\/em> incarne, en misant sur le symbolisme du bleu et non sur celui du noir, une repr\u00e9sentation de l\u2019histoire d\u2019hier et d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui\u2009; l\u2019intervalle de la r\u00e9\u00e9criture et de la relecture des dissonances associ\u00e9es \u00e0 la couleur de la peau.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Le titre de l\u2019exposition renvoie \u00e0 l\u2019auteur Patrick Straram, \u00e0 son \u00e9mission radiophonique<em> Blues Clair <\/em>diffus\u00e9e \u00e0 Radio-Canada de 1978 \u00e0 1979, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 ses \u00e9crits publi\u00e9s d\u00e8s 1980 qui portent sur la contreculture et l\u2019exil. Isol\u00e9e dans une salle feutr\u00e9e d\u2019une lumi\u00e8re bleue diffuse, une immense table de consultation offre une quinzaine des publications de Straram, que Meessen combine \u00e0 ses archives personnelles. L\u2019\u0153uvre cin\u00e9matographique <em>Ultramarine<\/em> (2018) est une consid\u00e9ration m\u00e9morielle sur le commerce colonial. Cette pi\u00e8ce centrale de l\u2019exposition est projet\u00e9e sur un dispositif \u00e9th\u00e9r\u00e9 enti\u00e8rement constitu\u00e9 de textile, rappelant une courtepointe artisanale. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9cran, l\u2019illustre pr\u00e9curseur afro-am\u00e9ricain du hip-hop des ann\u00e9es 1960, Gylan Kain, improvise sur une musique du batteur belge Lander Gyselinck, entour\u00e9 de divers accessoires sc\u00e9niques et instruments. Des images de l\u2019oppressante exploitation de groupes ethniques sont superpos\u00e9es \u00e0 la performance musicale pour illustrer le parl\u00e9-chant\u00e9 lyrique (spoken word) de Kain. Pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 la projection, l\u2019installation immersive <em>Discordia<\/em> (2018) r\u00e9f\u00e8re quant \u00e0 elle au soul\u00e8vement \u00e9tudiant de 1969, alors que six \u00e9tudiants carib\u00e9ens furent la cible de discrimination raciale \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 Sir George Williams, aujourd\u2019hui Universit\u00e9 Concordia, lieu o\u00f9 se trouve la galerie. L\u2019\u0153uvre propose une reconstitution partielle d\u2019une sc\u00e8ne de l\u2019apr\u00e8s-manifestation&nbsp;: des centaines de feuilles de papier \u00e9parpill\u00e9es au sol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Blues Klair<\/em> nous invite \u00e0 une prise de conscience des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s ethniques r\u00e9sultant du postcolonialisme. \u00c0 l\u2019encontre des r\u00e9gimes d\u2019appropriation culturelle et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard d\u2019une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 qui souffre toujours des disparit\u00e9s reli\u00e9es \u00e0 la colonisation, Vincent Meessen, en collaboration \u00e9troite avec la commissaire Mich\u00e8le Th\u00e9riault, d\u00e9fend les pr\u00e9occupations associ\u00e9es \u00e0 la couleur de la peau autrement, au moyen d\u2019archives (d\u00e9)construites concili\u00e9es dans la galerie impr\u00e9gn\u00e9e de bleu.
