D\u00e8s le d\u00e9but du parcours, l\u2019artiste substitue \u00e0 la passivit\u00e9 des spectateurs et spectatrices, h\u00e9rit\u00e9e de la sc\u00e8ne \u00e0 l\u2019italienne, le r\u00f4le d\u2019acteurs et actrices, qui se traduit par une entr\u00e9e en sc\u00e8ne depuis l\u2019obscurit\u00e9 des coulisses. Dans ce vestibule invers\u00e9 loge un double dispositif contenant, \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur d\u2019un pr\u00e9sentoir vitr\u00e9, trois sculptures au regard p\u00e9n\u00e9trant. En effet, l\u2019esth\u00e9tique du masque, ainsi que ses ouvertures pour les yeux, nous fait prendre conscience de ces deux r\u00f4les quotidiens, soit ceux de voyeur ou voyeuse et d\u2019acteur ou actrice voulant \u00eatre vu\u00b7e. Par cons\u00e9quent, Boyle d\u00e9joue d\u2019embl\u00e9e les r\u00e8gles dramaturgiques pour introduire un rapport introspectif quant \u00e0 la construction et \u00e0 la repr\u00e9sentation de soi comme individu et identit\u00e9 collective.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u00e9coup\u00e9e en six actes interreli\u00e9s, l\u2019exposition nous am\u00e8ne d\u2019abord sur un plateau central o\u00f9 l\u2019on peut d\u00e9couvrir la pratique de c\u00e9ramiste de l\u2019artiste \u00e0 travers un ensemble d\u2019\u0153uvres pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es dans des cimaises qui bordent la sc\u00e8ne. \u00c0 la mani\u00e8re d\u2019un th\u00e9\u00e2tre de poche, chaque dispositif favorise un contact intime avec les sayn\u00e8tes qu\u2019il contient, dont l\u2019ex\u00e9cution et la richesse iconographique style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019une des compositions, intitul\u00e9e <em>Peacock Spider<\/em> (2020), montre un arachnide par\u00e9 de ses atours flamboyants pour ex\u00e9cuter une danse envoutante. La main qui l\u2019accueille, symbole de savoir-faire et de dext\u00e9rit\u00e9, arbore \u00e0 son tour des ongles acryliques styl\u00e9s effectu\u00e9s par le designer Johnny Chiem (Hard Rock Nails)&nbsp;; elle \u00e9voque non seulement l\u2019apport des communaut\u00e9s asiatiques dans cette industrie, mais aussi celui des cultures noire et drag. Boyle montre ici que les jeux de s\u00e9duction et d\u2019affirmation de soi suscitent aussi parfois la convoitise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La d\u00e9marche de l\u2019artiste mise d\u2019abord sur les collaborations, rendues visibles dans une majorit\u00e9 d\u2019\u0153uvres de l\u2019exposition. Si la peinture <em>The collaboration<\/em> (2019), qui pr\u00e9sente une sc\u00e8ne de solidarit\u00e9 entre cr\u00e9atrices, en est l\u2019expression litt\u00e9rale, la sculpture <em>Judy<\/em> (2021), elle, en est le fruit, ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e avec le concours de l\u2019artisan \u00e9b\u00e9niste Anton Gosley, \u00e0 qui l\u2019on doit le torse \u00e0 trois bras. L\u2019assemblage de cette \u0153uvre, qui est une ode \u00e0 la f\u00e9minit\u00e9 plurielle, rappelle l\u2019esth\u00e9tique des mannequins des foires foraines d\u2019antan. Le personnage au style clownesque, cils allong\u00e9s et perruque \u00e0 l\u2019appui, tient de sa main gauche une marionnette \u00e0 fils repr\u00e9sentant la figure type de la m\u00e8re vieillie et \u00e9puis\u00e9e. Elle consacre \u00e9galement une section \u00e0 une (auto)r\u00e9flexion sur l\u2019identit\u00e9 blanche, compos\u00e9e notamment de l\u2019\u0153uvre <em>White Elephant<\/em> (2021). La sculpture monumentale, qui s\u2019inspire de la reconnaissance r\u00e9cente du pass\u00e9 colonial du Canada et des mouvements supr\u00e9macistes blancs dans notre propre culture, esquisse les contours de notre compr\u00e9hension en constante \u00e9volution de ce que signifie \u00eatre \u00ab&nbsp;blanc\u00b7he&nbsp;\u00bb.
