{"id":182546,"date":"2023-01-01T16:15:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-01T21:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esse.ca\/compte-rendu\/mathieu-pernotla-ruine-de-sa-demeure\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T10:52:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T15:52:20","slug":"mathieu-pernotla-ruine-de-sa-demeure","status":"publish","type":"compte-rendu","link":"https:\/\/staging.esse.ca\/en\/reviews\/mathieu-pernotla-ruine-de-sa-demeure\/","title":{"rendered":"Mathieu Pernot<br><em>La ruine de sa demeure<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">[In French]\n\nAvec un intitul\u00e9 tir\u00e9 d\u2019un recueil datant du 11<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, <em>Les imp\u00e9ratifs : Po\u00e8mes de l\u2019asc\u00e8se<\/em> d\u2019Ab\u00fb l-Al\u00e2 al-Ma\u2019arr\u00ee (Gallimard, 2010), l\u2019exposition de Mathieu Pernot, gagnant du prix HCB 2019, \u00e9tablit des ponts visuels entre des archives documentaires et des captations r\u00e9centes de lieux du Moyen-Orient en prenant leur \u00e9tat de ruine comme un filon commun.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019itin\u00e9rance photographique de Pernot d\u00e9marre avec l\u2019album photo de son grand-p\u00e8re, Ren\u00e9 Pernot, dont le voyage, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1926 et calqu\u00e9 sur le mod\u00e8le du Grand Tour, fixe le parcours initiatique de Beyrouth \u00e0 Mossoul en passant par Tripoli, Homs, Baalbeck, Palmyre et Damas. L\u2019installation hybride pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e \u00e0 la Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson n\u2019a toutefois pas la pr\u00e9tention scientifique du documentaire et encore moins celle du reportage journalistique. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De l\u2019aveu du cr\u00e9ateur, elle se veut plut\u00f4t un commentaire sur les situations d\u00e9crites, mais aussi sur les images, leur statut et leur fonction critique et esth\u00e9tique. En ce sens, Pernot adopte le point de vue du voyageur \u00e9tranger qui d\u00e9couvre les choses en surface et qui s\u2019en tient au visible. C\u2019est effectivement avec cette perspective distanci\u00e9e, mais toujours sensible que l\u2019artiste dresse un \u00e9tat des lieux \u00e0 la suite des trag\u00e9dies humaines subies au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies, dont de nombreuses guerres de territoires. C\u2019est ici un regard bienveillant que pose l\u2019artiste sur le quotidien des Al\u00e9pins, qui vivent, encore aujourd\u2019hui, dans les d\u00e9combres des attaques acharn\u00e9es du r\u00e9gime syrien et qui n\u2019ont d\u2019autre choix que de relever leurs manches pour reconstruire leur milieu de vie. \u00c0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de cela, l\u2019omnipr\u00e9sence des portraits victorieux de Bachar Al-Assad dans l\u2019espace public ravive la froideur du dictateur et sa r\u00e9pression sanglante. La sc\u00e8ne d\u2019une boucherie o\u00f9 sa photo tr\u00f4ne au-dessus des carcasses animales semble r\u00e9sumer en une seule image la pens\u00e9e de Pernot. Le projet de destruction du patrimoine assyrien et chr\u00e9tien tent\u00e9 \u00e0 maintes reprises par l\u2019\u00c9tat islamique figure aussi parmi les t\u00e9moignages visuels marquants, notamment au mus\u00e9e de Palmyre, o\u00f9 l\u2019\u00e9vacuation des \u0153uvres a \u00e9t\u00e9 orchestr\u00e9e de justesse avant les frappes de Daech par son directeur, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 assassin\u00e9 en aout 2015.
