Les \u0153uvres <em>Banyan body&nbsp;1<\/em> et <em>Basalt body&nbsp;1<\/em> (2023), par exemple, donnent \u00e0 voir une relation d\u2019hyperpr\u00e9sence, o\u00f9 la position vuln\u00e9rable du corps-offrande t\u00e9moigne de l\u2019humilit\u00e9 d\u00e9concertante avec laquelle l\u2019artiste fait face aux \u00e9l\u00e9ments. Un \u00e9tat de communion avec le territoire transparait ainsi dans chacun des neuf portraits photographiques grand format pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s au fil de la visite. Au moyen d\u2019un \u00ab&nbsp;po\u00e8me incorpor\u00e9&nbsp;\u00bb, iel invoque les r\u00e9cits des voix ancestrales, dont celles des esclaves et des travailleur\u00b7euses. Cette po\u00e9sie sonore r\u00e9cit\u00e9e par La&nbsp;Mackerel, parfois de mani\u00e8re incantatoire, dialogue avec la po\u00e9sie des impressions sur tissu qui mod\u00e8lent l\u2019antre d\u2019un espace am\u00e9nag\u00e9 pour le recueillement des convives. Le public peut d\u2019ailleurs visionner, \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de la structure comme \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, une projection vid\u00e9o dans laquelle l\u2019artiste effectue une performance sur une plage en apparence d\u00e9serte. R\u00e9alis\u00e9e en 2023, cette performance s\u2019inspire d\u2019une trag\u00e9die \u00e9cologique survenue en juillet 2020, quand le navire japonais MV&nbsp;<em>Wakashio<\/em>, en route pour le Br\u00e9sil, s\u2019est \u00e9chou\u00e9 sur les r\u00e9cifs du sud-ouest de l\u2019ile Maurice. Apr\u00e8s deux semaines sans prise en charge par les autorit\u00e9s locales et internationales, la coque rompue du vraquier a d\u00e9vers\u00e9 environ 1&nbsp;000&nbsp;tonnes d\u2019hydrocarbures dans l\u2019oc\u00e9an Indien et pollu\u00e9 lourdement tout un \u00e9cosyst\u00e8me. De l\u2019avis de La&nbsp;Mackerel, cette catastrophe \u00e9cologique r\u00e9cente conforte l\u2019impression du caract\u00e8re vide et jetable des iles. Ses propri\u00e9t\u00e9s transformatrices font non seulement \u00e9cho \u00e0 la fluidit\u00e9 du corps queer trans, mais son usage en grande quantit\u00e9 s\u2019av\u00e8re aussi un hommage \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00e9ritage familial de l\u2019artiste, pour sa part issu\u00b7e de la classe ouvri\u00e8re. Le sel, en tant que symbole oc\u00e9anique, se retrouve d\u2019ailleurs incrust\u00e9 sur les drap\u00e9s de l\u2019\u0153uvre <em>Text\/iles<\/em> (2019), pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e dans une vitrine de la galerie. Il constitue aussi la mati\u00e8re premi\u00e8re de sa suite, l\u2019installation vid\u00e9o et sonore <em>Your Body Is the Ocean<\/em> (2019). Ainsi, un amas de sel compact plac\u00e9 au centre de la pi\u00e8ce forme un \u00e9cran pour une projection vid\u00e9o o\u00f9 l\u2019artiste effectue un rituel avec des monticules de sel.
