Lane\u2019s reimagining of basic assumptions about life inspired Giii\u2019s earlier exhibition Parallel Membranes <\/em>(2022), whose title was itself a nod to a passage in Lane\u2019s book Transformer<\/em>. The field-like character of energy transmission across organic tissues inspired the electric zips of paired diptychs, whose stripes are alternately hard-edged and loosely brushed. Giii chose metallic pigments to materialize the inorganic ingredients of life in the oceanic primordial soup. The Effect of Temperature <\/em>recontextualized this earlier series, alongside the stunning atomic drama of Quantum Theatre <\/em>(2022), in relation to new works. The result was a striking superposition of microcosm and macrocosm, of molecular interactions and the spectacle of a planetary climate system in crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The holistic perspective that Giii gleans from Lane\u2019s visionary biochemistry recalls his earlier investigations of quantum theory. In Quantum Theatre<\/em>, the signal paradox of Schr\u00f6dinger\u2019s cat\u200a\u2014\u200ain which the eponymous feline is simultaneously alive and dead within a field of quantum relations\u200a\u2014\u200agives way to Lane\u2019s likening of the body to a fluctuating system of quantum states. In his recent artist\u2019s book Paint <\/em>(2022), Giii writes, \u201cThe parallel lives of painters is transferred to the voltage in their bodies which is ten trillion cells per second.\u201d A visual correlative of this insight is suggested by Quantum Theatre<\/em>, in which a numinous observer, illuminated as if by proscenium lights, contemplates a constellation of feathery atoms. This masterful oil pastel on canvas recalls earlier series of drawings whose architectural indications evoke stage spaces reminiscent of Giii\u2019s earlier career as a performance artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the gestural drama of Giii\u2019s new works on paper carry forward the Actionist daring of performances from the period of his association with the iconoclastic Centre for Experimental Art and Communication in the 1970s, a diligently reconstructed series of torn ink paintings embodies a new ethos of repair befitting the climate crises of our embattled present. Bound together with a combination of Scotch tape and conservator\u2019s tape, these works are also a poignant testament to his experience with bipolar disorder. Taking a page from recent biochemistry, Giii\u2019s art explores metabolic regulation as a material theatre of relations as well as a metaphor for sustainability and survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a PhD from the University of Toronto earned in 2016, Adam Lauder has taught courses on Canadian art at OCAD University and the University of Toronto. In 2018, he organized an exhibition of Rita Letendre\u2019s public art at YYZ Artists\u2019 Outlet.<\/p>\n
