\nWhen we dream, we process reality, drawing on memories and combining disparate objects, actions, and perceptions, both experienced and imaginary, which get woven into a detailed hallucinatory experience. Yann Pocreau\u2019s D\u00e9tours<\/em>, presented at the Manif d\u2019art, taps into this cognitive function, presenting a poignant reflection on the power of memories and dreams, their fleeting nature, and their profound impact on our identity and perception of reality. D\u00e9tours <\/em>is a three-channel slideshow projected onto a colossal 12-by-4-metre wall of ice, featuring over 250 vernacular slides from his personal ongoing collection, which was erected in the Parc de la Francophonie as a response to the biennial\u2019s theme, The Strength of Sleep<\/em>.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
The series of images selected includes holiday mementos, landscape shots, family portraits, even botched photographs from the 1950s to 1980s, and some perhaps more recent. The projected slides, selected randomly by an algorithmic program, engage with the cinematic Kuleshov effect, juxtaposing up to three images at a time to evoke endless dialogues and micro-narratives. The nostalgic essence of these images is both enhanced and abstracted by the ice\u2019s rugged texture, transforming them into blurry, sometimes unrecognizable compositions of colour and form. The gesture of congealing images in ice highlights how photographs are memory supports devoid of original sensory contexts such as scent and sound, yet with a dormant potential of affect. Projected in a public setting, the images become \u201cre-embodied\u201d through their interaction with the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is of particular significance that D\u00e9tours<\/em> is installed directly behind the provincial seat of government, where collective traumas are processed and societal dreams are imagined. The ephemeral nature of the ice wall, slowly melting and revealing sharper images with the arrival of spring, mirrors the transient quality of memory itself, symbolizing the gradual clarity that can come with time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experiencing D\u00e9tours<\/em> at night, as most biennale-goers must have, enhanced the dreamlike quality of the installation. The cold, long silent winter nights of Qu\u00e9bec City create a unique atmosphere in which the light from the projections pierces the darkness, drawing spectators into a meditative rhythm as the images scroll by. Light, a central element in Pocreau\u2019s work, ties this installation to his broader practice. During a residency at the Mont-M\u00e9gantic Observatory in 2018, he reflected on the cosmic origins of light, drawing parallels to the narrative potential of found images. This cosmic perspective enriches D\u00e9tours<\/em>, framing the projected light, and thereby the whole installation, as a bridge between past and present, personal and collective memory.<\/p>\n
