What if women ruled the world? Since December 2023, the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EM\u03a3T) has been undergoing a transformation orchestrated by a coalition of international women artists, who are seeking to reimagine the institution through the lens of female empowerment and gender equality. Spearheaded by the museum\u2019s director, Katerina Gregos, this evolution is unfurling through a captivating series of exhibitions dedicated to women artists and those identifying as female. <\/pre>\n\n\n\n
Among these vibrant expressions is the show All Dreams Are Vexing<\/em>, curated by Anna Mykoniati, featuring the reflections of Greek visual artist Malvina Panagiotidi. Panagiotidi\u2019s solo exhibition stems from research conducted at the residence of Eleni Boukoura-Altamoura in Spetses. Boukoura-Altamoura (1821\u200a\u2013\u200a1900) stands as a pioneering figure, being the first Greek woman to pursue a formal art education, which she achieved while disguised as a man. Today, she is widely recognized as one of the earliest and most influential female painters in the history of modern Greece. However, her legacy transcends mere artistic prowess, delving deep into the realms of personal tragedy. Haunted by the devastating loss of her children to tuberculosis, Boukoura-Altamoura\u2019s psyche succumbed to turmoil, leading her to seclude herself within the confines of her island abode. There, she immersed herself in the enigmatic world of spiritualism, seeking connection with her departed offspring through mystical rites. Panagiotidi\u2019s tribute to Boukoura-Altamoura takes an unconventional path, moving away from romanticism for a contemporary interpretation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her approach involves a critical re-evaluation and reframing of magic through present-day perspectives and socio-political contexts. This endeavour is developed along two strands. First, she examines Boukoura-Altamoura\u2019s house as a nexus of intimacy and care, yet also of confinement and isolation. Second, she appropriates fragments from the diaries of \u201cthe madwoman in the attic,\u201d weaving them into her own narrative tapestry. Project Room 2 at EM\u03a3T is transformed into an immersive installation. A welcoming fuchsia carpet sets the stage, evoking feelings of confidence and vividness often associated with this bold hue. Architectural features, marked by apertures and closures, guide the public through a symbolic exploration of Boukoura-Altamoura\u2019s house and mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition presents new glass and bronze sculptures that act as hybrid entities, both autonomous and interconnected. These pieces seamlessly blend elements of the (non)human, plant, and animal worlds, creating a ghostly ambience. Notably, a striking hanging metal piece and the structural supports of other works draw inspiration from Boukoura-Altamoura\u2019s manuscripts, in which symbols take on tangible form. Candle-like wax sculptures, resembling flesh, intricately depict aspects of the Spetses mansion. As they burn, visitors bear witness to their gradual disappearance\u200a\u2014\u200aan ode to the ephemeral nature of memory. Although these creations have been a hallmark of Panagiotidi\u2019s practice for nearly a decade, there is a sense that she can push their boundaries even further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The show not only tells Boukoura-Altamoura\u2019s story in a fresh light but also provokes contemplation on the power of women\u2019s voices in shaping our collective dreams and enchanting the world. Through its evocative portrayal, it serves as a reminder of the impact that marginalized narratives can have in inspiring societal change while fostering a more inclusive reality for all.<\/p>\n
