This is perhaps the most challenging proposition entailed by Captured Earth, the show that Kristin Taylor has expertly and imaginatively curated. The selection of work, drawn from the Museum of Contemporary Photography’s collection, establishes a dialogue among a broad range of practices and approaches, all of which, in one way or another, aim at bridging the documentaristic distance that has often characterized the idiom of the photographic medium.

It is therefore perhaps not a surprise that indexicalities of all kinds and manners should play a big role here — the material essence of photography is pushed to the fore, and sometimes to the limit, to unleash expressive potential well beyond the glossiness of traditional prints. An overall sense of healthy disregard for the purity and pristineness of the medium brightly shines through. At times, as in Jeremy Bolen’s haunting images, rolls of photographic film have spent months buried underground near the banks of the contaminated Fox River before they re-emerge transfigured as indexical maps of anthropogenic corruptions; at others, as in the stitched-together cyanotype photograms by Dakota Mace, it is the ephemeral nature of ancestral memory to become poetically inscribed in the traces of branches, rocks, and rain.

Dakota Mace
Tséyi (Among the Canyons), 2023.
Photo: courtesy of the artist

Artist after artist, the exhibition deftly but powerfully invites viewers to actively participate in the aesthetic and philosophical deconstruction of the classical and colonialist-derived notion of landscape. The ultimate aim is to invite them to rethink their relationship with the land on their own ground and within the framework of an unprecedentedly complex present moment. For a photography exhibition, Captured Earth is distinctively tactile, at least in the sense that photographic surfaces are deliberately desacralized: they are often dirty or rough. This is no small challenge for a medium that is intrinsically obsessed with preservation in both representational and material registers. Most of the work on show is delicate, fragile, or intentionally vulnerable.

Meghann Riepenhoff
Ecotone #285 (Bryant Park, NY 12.15.17, Mixed Precipitation of Freezing Rain and Snow), 2017.
Photo : courtesy of the artist

From Ana Teresa Barboza’s landscape photographs painstakingly stitched with natural, plant-dyed fibres, and Meghann Riepenhoff’s cyanotypes recording the movements of rain and snow, to Barbara Crane’s larger-than-life portraits of tree bark fragments, the works in Captured Earth subvert the anthropocentric perceptual parameters that often dictate hierarchical arrangements of cultural and natural entities in everyday life. Time, scale, point of view, perspectives — every certainty is open to reconsideration. As a result, the exhibition is not only extremely timely but offers valuable and inspiring opportunities to reconfigure our relationship with the natural world at a time of crisis. More specifically, it insistently gestures toward the need to radically expand the idiomatic identity of the photographic medium, and thus symbolically that of our gaze, in order to become part of new and interconnected ecologies that no longer rely on obsolete subject-object  division.

Ana Teresa Barboza, Dakota Mace, Giovanni Aloi, Meghann Riepenhoff

Ana Teresa Barboza, Dakota Mace, Giovanni Aloi, Meghann Riepenhoff

Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago
May 24 – August 18, 2024

[884
7089
[932
7167,7168,7169
["post-254982","compte-rendu","type-compte-rendu","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-reviews","numeros-112-dreams","auteurs-giovanni-aloi-en","artistes-ana-teresa-barboza-en","artistes-dakota-mace-en","artistes-meghann-riepenhoff-en
["GET
