{"id":266027,"date":"2025-01-01T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-01T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esse.ca\/compte-rendu\/james-gardnerbremecstatic-distance-em\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T14:37:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T19:37:00","slug":"james-gardner-ecstatic-distance","status":"publish","type":"compte-rendu","link":"https:\/\/staging.esse.ca\/en\/reviews\/james-gardner-ecstatic-distance\/","title":{"rendered":"James Gardner<br><em>Ecstatic Distance<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">[In French]<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Dans son exposition personnelle au titre aussi po\u00e9tique que cryptique, James Gardner proposait une immersion dans un montage lumineux de temps, de mat\u00e9riaux et d\u2019iconographies qui parvenait, de mani\u00e8re radicale, \u00e0 caract\u00e9riser et habiter ce qui fait la sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9 po\u00e9tique de l\u2019espace de l\u2019image&nbsp;: la complexit\u00e9 temporelle qui y \u0153uvre et la puissance transcendantale \u2013 spirituelle\u2009? \u2013 de la mati\u00e8re, qui, bien au-del\u00e0 de sa vocation de v\u00e9hicule de la repr\u00e9sentation, porte en elle l\u2019 \u00ab\u2009aura\u2009\u00bb de l\u2019\u0153uvre.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Sur trois murs, une suite d\u2019\u0153uvres \u00e0 l\u2019iconographie directement inspir\u00e9e des ic\u00f4nes byzantines, que l\u2019artiste a pu observer lors d\u2019un s\u00e9jour pass\u00e9 dans des sites monastiques de Gr\u00e8ce et de Turquie. De ces vestiges d\u2019une \u00e8re o\u00f9 l\u2019ic\u00f4ne n\u2019\u00e9tait non pas \u00ab\u2009repr\u00e9sentation\u2009\u00bb, \u00ab\u2009tableau\u2009\u00bb ou produit de \u00ab\u2009l\u2019art\u2009\u00bb, mais bel et bien l\u2019image de la pr\u00e9sence divine signifi\u00e9e par la feuille d\u2019or, Gardner retient \u00e9galement la tangibilit\u00e9 tr\u00e8s mat\u00e9rielle de ces productions souvent mang\u00e9es par les vicissitudes du temps. Sur une toile de jute badigeonn\u00e9e de gesso, cet enduit avec lequel les peintres du Moyen-\u00c2ge pr\u00e9paraient leurs panneaux de bois, Gardner sculpte une image d\u00e9grad\u00e9e : plus qu\u2019une simple composition faisant \u00e9cho \u00e0 l\u2019iconographie sacr\u00e9e des ic\u00f4nes, c\u2019est une image du temps qui est pass\u00e9 dessus \u2013 image qui craque, dont des pans manquent, mais dans laquelle on arrive encore \u00e0 distinguer ici un nimbe, l\u00e0 une posture ou un geste, une architecture. Une sorte de mur de mat\u00e9rialit\u00e9s comprim\u00e9es dans cette trame grillag\u00e9e, la d\u00e9bordant par endroits. Son titre&nbsp;: <em>The Iconostasis<\/em> (2019). Dans les \u00e9glises byzantines, l\u2019iconostase est la cloison combl\u00e9e d\u2019ic\u00f4nes qui s\u00e9pare l\u2019espace du clerg\u00e9 de l\u2019espace des fid\u00e8les. Suivant l\u2019\u00e9tymologie grecque, \u00ab\u2009iconostase\u2009\u00bb signifie litt\u00e9ralement \u00ab\u2009image dress\u00e9e\u2009\u00bb. L\u2019image que l\u2019on regarde est un objet \u00ab\u2009polychronique\u2009\u00bb dont il faut \u00ab\u2009reconna\u00eetre qu\u2019elle nous survivra, que nous sommes devant elle l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment fragile\u2009\u00bb (Georges Didi-Huberman, <em>Devant le temps<\/em>).
