The exhibition, curated by Erika Del Vecchio, engaged with the dynamics and tensions that exist between the perceptible and the impermanent and invited viewers into a space of poetic contemplation. Elegantly orchestrated, it inspired a playful curiosity, offering moments of wonder and reverie. The artists work across a broad spectrum of media and techniques—sculpture, photography, new media, and sound. A discordant selection came together into a surprisingly cohesive whole, blending artworks that initially appeared disparate but coalesced in subtle, unexpected ways. This dissonance of voices was precisely the elemental force of this exhibition; it echoed through the hidden corners of inspiration that Del Vecchio uncovered.

Throughout Hors Champs, the interplay between what is seen and what is hidden unfolded gradually. Upon entering the former presbytery, viewers encountered Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s Hormonium, a high-concept digital piece that illustrates the evolving hormonal profile of a fictional person over a ninety-year lifespan. Created in 2022, the work currently reflects the physiology of a two-year-old, tracking ultradian, circadian, and infradian rhythms that govern hormone levels in the body. This digital portrayal of bodily functions serves as a poignant reminder of our own aging process and the hidden biochemical dance that pilots our existence.

Farther along, Karilee Fuglem’s when you become breath (2024) hovered subtly above, almost invisible at first glance. Made from lightweight paper and vinyl petals, the installation responds to ambient light and gentle air currents, giving form to the quiet, constant movements that shape our surroundings. Similarly, Chih-Chien Wang’s work delves into the simplicity of everyday life. His photographic practice revolves around observing space and the unyielding passage of time. When drawn to a subject, he arranges it instinctively, creating images of subtle beauty that inspire profound emotions, such as hope and gratitude.

Karilee Fuglem
when you become breath, installation view, Livart, Montréal, 2024.
Photo: Katya Konioukhova, courtesy of Livart, Montréal

Chih-Chien Wang
A Newborn (left) ; Transition (right), installation views, Livart, Montréal, 2024.
Photo: Katya Konioukhova, courtesy of Livart, Montréal

Other works engaged with material transformation and memory. Gallery-goers were invited to pick up the phone and dial any number to hear a poem, which was randomly allocated from a selection chosen and read by the artists or the curator. This intimate moment of poetic exchange tied together the exhibition’s thematic core, celebrating individual expression while emphasizing a shared human connection. Ultimately, the aim of Hors Champs was to compel us into a contemplative space in which the complexities of the world are revealed through attentive observation. By foregrounding the beauty of seemingly inconsequential moments and banal objects, the exhibition encouraged a mindful encounter with the world, allowing the forsaken splendour of our surroundings to emerge with striking clarity.

A curator of exhibitions and projects in North America, Europe, and Asia, Anaïs Castro is a founding member of the curatorial collective The Department of Love and an editorial member of Daily Lazy.
