Unlike the divisive enclosures of the Modernist grid, there is something boundless about the dot, whose circumference can evoke widely divergent scales of reference—from the cellular to the planetary. Freely circulating across Ghosh’s elegant fibre-based installations and Howlett’s intricate egg-tempera panels, the effervescent geometry of this figure conjures a fertile cross-pollination of ideas and material processes.

This dialogism is most explicit in Fruit Tree (2023), the only work in the show co-created by the two artists. Following a fallow period during the pandemic, Howlett was inspired to return to the studio by Ghosh’s gift of test silkscreens, whose patterned spots he dutifully annotated in watercolour and gouache with a colourful array of smaller circles. Patiently stitched together, these painted fields of recycled pantleg recall the interactions of elementary particles or, occasionally, the caput mortuum of alchemical symbolism.

Hermetic imagery is familiar territory for Howlett, whose past bodies of work have limned transcendental practices and ritual diagrams. His contributions to Leaking Logic extend the concerns of more recent series, however, in which intangible realms of the spirit give way to “humoral” theories of health and temperament that shaped understandings of the body from antiquity through the Renaissance. Derived from the Greek word for sap or juice (chymos), humoral medicine was premised on the belief that physical and mental health are regulated by a shifting balance of four fundamental bodily fluids.

Patrick Howlett
Humoural (1), 2022, installation view, Susan Hobbs Gallery, Toronto, 2024.
Photo: Toni Hafkenscheid, courtesy of Susan Hobbs Gallery, Toronto

The terse stagecraft of Howlett’s tempera abstractions is based on the medieval humoral handbook Tacuinum Sanitatis, a Latin translation of an eleventh-century Arabic manuscript that was as much cookbook as medical textbook. Prescribing remedies for a wide range of ailments, the lavishly illuminated manual contains the earliest-known image of a carrot. A visually stunning record of the border-crossing transmission of humoral knowledge across cultures and languages, Tacuinum Sanitatis is an apt point of departure for Howlett’s scattering of droplet-like dots, which pulse with hypnogogic intensity in Night Limbo (2024).

Patrick Howlett
Night Limbo, installation view, Susan Hobbs Gallery, Toronto, 2024.
Photo: Toni Hafkenscheid, courtesy of Susan Hobbs Gallery, Toronto

Ghosh’s reclaimed-fabric installations unfold a subtle interplay of pattern and disruption to more understated hypnotic effect. The tightly argued palette of greys and blues in Flat bottoms out (2024) invites a mode of careful viewing that can tip over into mesmeric absorption. Titles such as Kali’s tongue (2024) reinforce the bodily associations of Ghosh’s draped forms, which suggest garments ranging from ritual hoods to more profane costumes such as the polka-dot bikini of the popular song. Deftly interrupted patterns of circles and seams wittily translate the slip of the tongue glossed by the title Slip tongue (2024). The lively contrast between hand-painted dots and cloth support also contains a discreet suggestion of mobility reminiscent of the French physiologist Étienne-Jules Marey’s use of shiny buttons on black-fabric suits to document the motions of his test subjects through multiple photographic exposures—a precursor to contemporary motion-capture techniques.

<div
