For a number of years I\u2019ve been joking about working on my Famous Disappearing Act. But as much as I\u2019d like to vanish in a puff of smoke, never to be seen or heard from again \u2014ideally while on stage to receive a major award\u2014chances are I\u2019ll go out like most people, quietly, perhaps with a whimper. For the \u201cDisappearance\u201d issue of esse<\/em>, I have assembled a \u00adnumber of images from my work to reflect an awareness that, to paraphrase Joyce, one by one we are all becoming shades.
