Zinnia Naqvi\u2019s practice is permeated by familial archives, intergenerational dialogues, and politics of belonging. Principally lens-based, her work presents images that speak to the intimacy inherent to cherished family archives, as well as the embedded values that it represents. Past and Present II<\/em> (2012\u200a\u2013\u200a15) is a photographic series that explores the intergenerational identity construction of migrant families. Pairs of photographs offer for comparison, on one side, archival images of migrant parents in their home country, and on the other side, their children recreating the archival image, a few decades later, in a Canadian setting. More than merely showcasing the air de famille <\/em>between parent and child, the series explores the way in which cultural, spatial, and temporal gaps between the country of origin and the hosting country might be bridged through intergenerational relationality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also rooted in family archives, Dear Nani<\/em> (2017\u200a\u2013\u200aongoing) explores themes of gender performance and colonial mimicry. What started as an installation in 2017 was transformed\u200a\u2014\u200aduring the pandemic\u200a\u2014\u200ainto two photobooks (French and English). In both instantiations of the project, we are presented with pictures taken by Naqvi\u2019s maternal grandfather (Nana) depicting the artist\u2019s maternal grandmother (Nani) posing in her husband\u2019s outfits during their honeymoon in Pakistan (1948). Nani holds a Children\u2019s Dictionary<\/em> (destined for the British colony\u2019s subjects), and by doing so intermingles both gender and cultural performativity. In what seems to be an endless mise en ab\u00eeme<\/em>, the artist herself impersonates her grandmother impersonating her husband impersonating a British man. Through what we come to know as being purely fictional dialogue, Naqvi seeks to fill in the blanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Yours to Discover<\/em> (2019\u200a\u2013\u200aongoing), Naqvi dives once again into her own archive. This time, she creates installations that combine archival photographs of her family posed in front of Canadian landmarks in Ontario (Niagara Falls, the CN Tower, and Cullen Gardens) and an assemblage of childhood and board games. Here, she interrogates the educational values inherent in both and unpacks what it truly means to adopt a \u201cCanadian way of life.\u201d Through and through, Naqvi\u2019s art practice is a testament to migrant family stories and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
