As a child, Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf collected hockey cards. And so was born his fascination for systems classifying objects, images, and words, linking his visual arts and literary practices. Passionate about popular culture, MAKP has exhibited numerous collections of classified ads, trophies, cookbooks, and vintage pin buttons, in addition to sports cards. An avid hockey fan, MAKP admits that his interest in the national sport lies in part in its graphic elements: the cards, of course, but also the jerseys, logos, and colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having arranged thousands of cards from his collection into compositions resembling seminal Canadian paintings in Peinture Canadienne (2013 \u2014 19), MAKP created the collage series Goalie on Art<\/em> (2015 \u2014 21), in which images of goalies in action are collaged directly onto abstract works and archival art-book photographs. By combining sport and pictorial tradition, MAKP tackles hockey iconography through an aesthetic lens. Works of accumulation, these collages position icons of Canadian popular culture in relation with canonical works to create new images that intend to democratize art and its history. The series Goalie \u00d7 Goalie<\/em> (2015 \u2014 21) pulls away from \u201chigh culture\u201d to concentrate on sporting artefacts that the artist juxtaposes and transforms with a touch of humour, resulting in works that are improbable encounters between opposing team players merged in absurd positions on the same card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several elements from this corpus can be found in the art book Hockeyeurs<\/em> (2021), distributed by the Mus\u00e9e Ambulant to initiate a new public into art collecting. Accompanying the collages is an eponymous text that catalogues the names of thousands of players from the National Hockey League. Delivered by mail during the playoffs, the work is wrapped in a poster sealed with a sticker. To open it, the seal must be torn, thus re-creating the experience of unwrapping a pack of hockey cards, an act that marked the collective imagination of a generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
