On her upbringing in Kaua’i, Noe writes, “It really does take work to make yourself believe that you could be more than what is expected of you. What is expected of you as someone from a small island is to not amount to much. If you are from the middle of nowhere, you are convinced through media and other forces that you are not empowered to break any sort of cycle or challenge the status quo that your family or community has.” 3 3 - Noe, interview, 2018.

This conflict originates from the very first Pacific-colonial encounters. Early visitors considered the island chains economically and culturally insignificant in comparison to continental Europe, and these views were passed down intergenerationally to Hawaiian Islanders. Tongan and Fijian scholar Epeli Hau’ofa (1939–2009) speaks to this problem in his seminal essay, “Our Sea of Islands” (1993)4 4 - Epeli Hau’ofa, “Our Sea of Islands,” in A New Oceania: Rediscovering Our Sea of Islands, ed. Hau’ofa states that feelings of belittlement have been transmitted through generations, and he examines two opposing concepts for viewing the Pacific and Polynesian Islands. The colonial phrase “islands in a far sea” claims that Islanders are far from urban trade centres in continental Europe and North America, thus forming the false perception that the Islands and Islanders are too small to gain economic independence. However, this “smallness” is relative. The Indigenous worldview that Hau’ofa presents, “a sea of islands,” posits the region as a network, within which there is freedom to participate in trade and the exchange of knowledge. Hau’ofa claims that this optimistic perspective of the islands as a network must take precedence to encourage Pacific Islanders to work through feelings left over by colonial contact. Noe’s practice reflects Hau’ofa’s philosophy, in that the culture of the Islands must take up space in a global and diasporic context. Through her progressive and insightful work, Noe is already going beyond what is expected of her, not only as an artist but as a Hawaiian Islander.

Kari Noe
Démonstration de Kilo Hōkū1, 2018.
Photo : Patrick Karjala

Noe’s practice reflects Hau’ofa’s philosophy, in that the culture of the Islands must take up space in a global and diasporic context. Educational materials were also provided as a way to outline Kilo Hōkū’s mission and share the larger history of Hawaiian open-ocean wayfinding. The project is ongoing, and is currently being modified to enhance user experience at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa’s Laboratory for Advanced Visualization and Applications. In upcoming iterations, the simulation will include a controller that will allow users to rotate the Earth on its axis, and new celestial markers will be implemented. Eventually, the team hopes to make the simulation available for home use, and they are currently looking into possibilities for the software to be used on a mobile app. Overall, Kilo Hōkū’s educational and entertainment functions create a means to restore an aspect of Hawaiian culture that, until recently, has been hidden from most of the public.

Colonial policies enforced by the United States following the annexation of Hawai’i resulted in the loss of many native Hawaiian traditions and forms of knowledge, wayfinding being one of them. As a VR simulation, the project offers a digital platform on which users can immerse themselves in a Hawai’i that existed before colonial contact, making Kilo Hōkū a fundamentally decolonial project.
