The moon was waxing on the edge of full. Rezaire beckoned us to form a circle as she wove tales of the moon gathered from ancient astronomy, Kemetic yoga, and the ancestral spiritual traditions from the dense jungles of French Guiana, where she currently lives and works.

Rezaire recounted the Teko ancestral origin story of the moon: Under cover of three consecutive nights, a young girl was assaulted in her bed. On the third night, she lay in wait in her hammock, armed with genipa, a natural black ink used in the village of Camopi for tattooing. Guggenberger invited us to view the moon through her Meade LX90-EMC high-resolution telescope. As we took turns observing the ink-pitted craters, she described sunken lakes of solidified basaltic lava, ancient crustal highlands, and a cosmic collision that blasted material debris into orbit some four billion years ago. Her tales hardly resembled the disenchantment with nature promised by Enlightenment rationality. The transdisciplinary dialogue between the unlikely collaborators inched forward like this, searching for points of alignment among the languages of scientific realism, ancestral myth, and speculative fiction.

Syzygy is an astronomical term for a phenomenon in which astral bodies fall into alignment.
